How Does Federal Workers Compensation Work?
Workers’ compensation for federal employees is different from that of non-federal employees. If you’re a civilian employee of the federal government, you are covered by FECA (Federal Employees' Compensation Act) instead of being covered by your state's workers' compensation plan.
We specialize in the preparation of FECA claims. FECA laws were created in 1916 to protect federal workers who become ill or injured as a result of their employment. The program is managed by the OWCP (Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs), a division of the DOL (Department of Labor). Their requirements can often be difficult to figure out, especially if you haven’t been through the process before.
Your claim must be submitted properly to avoid unnecessary delay, or worse, denial of benefits. Our free claims assistance service ensures that your claim is filed correctly, maximizing the probability of acceptance.
OWCP Consultants
Our consultants keep up to speed with the OWCP’s requirements for FECA claims. We have prepared successful claims for employees of many federal agencies, including:
- Veterans Affairs (VA)
- United States Postal Service (USPS)
- Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
- Social Security Administration (SSA)
- Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
- Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
- Homeland Security (DHS)
- Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)
- Department of Defense (DOD)
- Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP)
Union members of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) are all eligible for FECA coverage. FECA also covers some other groups, such as specific volunteer organizations, like the Peace Corps, as well as federal jurors.
Regular state workers’ compensation typically covers government contractors working indirectly for the federal government. We can help you find out if you fall under FECA if you aren’t sure.
You Deserve OWCP Benefits
FECA laws afford you the right to work with a doctor of your choosing. That has been the case since 1974, when FECA was amended to include this right. OWCP authorizes certain medical providers to provide healthcare to FECA beneficiaries, and our clinic is OWCP-authorized. Not all employees are aware that they can choose their doctor and that they are under no obligation to see the doctor suggested by their manager.
We will help you get your claim accepted by the OWCP as quickly as possible. Often when a claim is submitted improperly, the injured worker must pay for injury-related expenses throughout delays with their claim. We can help you avoid extensive wait times and expenses by promptly getting you the benefits you deserve. FECA benefits cover all of your medical expenses, including medications, treatments, devices and supplies, and transportation to and from treatment appointments. If you have already spent money, we will help get it all back for you, through reimbursement from FECA.
Don’t risk costly delays in receiving your benefits by trying to prepare your claim by yourself. Once you are assured that your claim has been accepted, the peace of mind you’ll feel will make it that much easier to concentrate on your treatment plan to heal your injury. Let us help!
